A new report shows that over 100,000 people viewed a fake SpaceX livestream combining real video with an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated Elon Musk voiceover.
According to a report and screenshot from TrustNodes, over 125,000 people were watching a SpaceX livestream on a fake YouTube channel with a QR code asking for crypto donations on the screen.
The QR code remained on the screen for the entirety of the livestream.
The YouTube channel, @SpaceXFromElon, has nearly 3 million subscribers, despite its prominent lack of a check mark. The real SpaceX YouTube channel, @SpaceX, has 6.7 million subscribers and, perhaps most importantly, a verified check mark.
In the fake live stream, the AI-generated Elon Musk voice, after expounding on the benefits and future profits of Bitcoin (BTC), directly asks for viewers to scan the QR code in a pitch to make them crypto-rich.
AI-generated crypto scam videos have been on the rise with the explosion of the technology. Elon Musk is a common target, and the same channel used the same live stream during the eclipse just two months ago.
Musk is well known in the crypto community as a Dogecoin (DOGE) supporter.
Metrics on how many viewers followed the QR code are currently unavailable.
